International Women’s Day Highlight: Encompass Housing

To celebrate International Women's Day, we are highlighting the exceptional women leading Encompass Housing, an organization at the forefront of providing housing solutions for marginalized communities. Their leadership is not just about managing operations; it's about uplifting those in need and fostering an environment of inclusivity and support.

Deby Wolford, the Executive Director, brings more than two decades of experience to the table, with a history rich in advocacy and innovation. From her early days at Collette's Children’s Home to her current role, Deby's passion for making a tangible difference shines through. She embodies the spirit of leadership that goes beyond mere management to truly empower communities.

Sonia Davalos, in her role as Director of Housing Supports, is a direct source of hope for families striving for stability. Transitioning from real estate to the nonprofit sector, Sonia applies her expertise with compassion and dedication, ensuring families find not just a house, but a home where they can flourish.

Betty Medina, Director of Compliance, plays a crucial role in the integrity and success of Encompass's initiatives. Her journey reflects a deep commitment to the organization's vision, ensuring that operations not only meet but exceed standards of excellence.

These leaders face industry challenges head-on, from overcoming judgments based on appearances to navigating the complexities of housing support. Their resilience is a testament to the strength and determination women bring to leadership roles, especially in sectors that directly impact human lives.

Deby shares her journey of starting Encompass, highlighting the challenges and triumphs:

“Starting up a nonprofit was a skill set that I did not have before... It's one thing to help build out programs and expand programs and oversee a nonprofit, but to have it be my own, it could be overwhelming at times. I'm pretty proud of what I've built over the last year and didn't know that I had it in me.” — Deby Wolford

The success of Encompass Housing lies not just in the numbers served but in the lives transformed. The organization's ethos, driven by compassion and a nurturing spirit, reflects the unique perspective women bring to leadership roles. Betty encapsulates this beautifully:

“I think because we (Deby, Sonia, and Betty) are mothers, we are nurturers by nature. We want to take care of people. We want to take care of our families… That's our unique perspective. And we do it through love and compassion.” — Betty Medina

As we observe International Women's Day, it's crucial to acknowledge and celebrate the roles women play in driving social change. Encompass Housing, under the guidance of Deby, Sonia, and Betty, showcases how empowering women in leadership can lead to innovative, compassionate solutions for community challenges.

Looking to the future, Encompass Housing aims to broaden its impact, with plans to expand its model nationwide. This vision is a testament to the power of female-led leadership in not just meeting but exceeding the needs of communities across the United States.

“In five years, we’ll definitely be a lot more known across the United States. Encompass will be a household name for housing people and families nationwide.” — Sonia Davalos

Today, we honor the incredible work of the women at Encompass Housing, who remind us of the profound impact we can make by leading with empathy, vision, and an unwavering commitment to uplift those in need. Their leadership lights the way for a future where every individual has access to a safe, dignified, and stable home.
