Beyond Labels: Uncovering the Diverse Faces of Homelessness
Homelessness is often seen through a single lens, but we know that it has many faces, each with its unique story of struggle and triumph. At Encompass Housing, our team encounters diverse individuals and families every day that have each experienced their share of challenges but are desperately seeking stability, safety, and hope. Here, we share a few of the many inspiring stories that showcase the power of resilience and the impact of compassionate support.

Amir: A Journey to Safe Haven
Amir and his wife lived in Costa Mesa, CA for over twenty years, relying on Social Security income. However, as rent prices soared, they found themselves unable to maintain their housing. In January 2023, they left their apartment with no clear path forward. Amir’s wife was dealing with health issues at the time, so she stayed temporarily with her sister while Amir lived in their car.
By March of 2024, the couple had reached out to multiple organizations, seeking help but finding no viable solutions for affordable housing. By the time they came across Encompass Housing, they were exhausted. Yet by collaborating with their nephew and a senior affordable housing manager, our team secured a beautiful apartment for them in San Juan Capistrano. The joy of seeing Amir and his wife in a safe and secure home was indescribable.
The most remarkable part of their story is the serendipitous mistake by the property manager, who inadvertently bypassed a year-long waitlist, allowing Amir and his wife to move in immediately. It was a twist of fate that brought them the stability they so desperately needed and deserved.

Kaylee & Victor: Building A Life Together
Kaylee and Victor are a young, extraordinary couple who both have high-functioning autism. They were married last summer and living in a family member's living room, which brought many challenges. Despite this, they were determined to live independently and build their life together.
When Kaylee and Victor first joined our program, they were anxious and hesitant. However, their housing navigator, Michael, eased their fears by explaining our services and guiding them through the process. With renewed confidence, Kaylee and Victor fully committed to finding their own studio apartment with our team’s support.
Their determination paid off when they were notified of a vacant unit soon after submitting a pre-screening application. Michael took them on a tour, and they fell in love with the place. Once their application was approved, our partner organization, Furnishing Hope, stepped in to help furnish their new home, providing much-needed household supplies and even a brand-new bed for their beloved dog, Brownie.
Kaylee, Victor, and Brownie are now happily settled in their new home, a testament to the unwavering commitment of our team to empower clients and help them achieve their full potential.

These stories illustrate that homelessness can affect anyone, regardless of age, background, or circumstance. Amir, Kaylee, and Victor each faced unique challenges but ultimately found hope and stability through our Housing Navigation program.

They expertly navigate complex housing systems while providing emotional support to those who have been through life’s toughest challenges.
